~:: THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT ::~

Art is an expression of the mind, while originating from the heart. Its meaning is always subjective, never exactly invoking the same sentiment from painting to painting even though the general intention and theme may be the same.

The creation of paintings brings a sense of accomplishment for the Artist. It is his way of leaving a legacy separate and apart from his children. In all his works he endeavours to convey, that which constitutes one man's view of West Indian life .... spirited and sublimely special.

The works of the Artist are derived from a West Indian perspective based on elements, which have made an impression on his mind. In other words the Artist is inspired by the need to express his creativity and given the chance, to share his imagination.

As with all paintings done in the oil media, these works are time consuming. Depending on the amount of detail as well as the subject matter, a 16" x 22" piece may take a total of forty (40) man-hours. The paintings are done in an impasto style with the use of both knife and brush. With each successive piece, the Artist tries to improve his work, learning from past compositions. The artists that have influenced his works are known as Impressionists.

While the objective may be to portray a realistic "imaginary scene", mere imitation of nature is not the goal. All the works are compositions derived from ideas in the mind of the artist. The goal is to evoke a poignant visceral response, even before the viewer's intellect acknowledges the content of the artwork.

The goal of the Artist is to improve his style and ultimately the quality of his paintings, such that West Indian art will be further recognised. To do this the Artist will have to develop a marketing strategy that will assist him in this objective. Herein lies the challenge, and one that will take him on the adventure of his life.
